Down, Kruger, down! (British poster, 1900)

Text: Liverpool Express. Down, Kruger, down!!! Pretoria!!!

Year: 1900.

Publisher: Liverpool Express.

Artist: NA.

Additional information: Published during the Second Boer War, showing the British lion subduing the Boer leader Paul Kruger. Pretoria was the capital of the Transvaal Republic, which was led by Kruger: the British captured the city in June 1900, forcing the Boers to retreat and begin a two-year guerrilla war. The British poured troops and resources into the conflict, and also introduced concentration camps and a scorched earth policy that drew criticism from around the world. The war ended in Boer defeat and Britain’s annexation of both the Transvaal Republic and the Orange Free State. Kruger left in 1900, not long after the major British offensive, and would never return to South Africa.
