This is the enemy (British poster, ca 1980)

Text: This is the enemy – not the Russians, not the Americans, this is the enemy.

Year: ca. 1980.

Publisher: Medical Campaign Against Nuclear Weapons (MCANW).

Artist: NA.

Additional information: MCANW was founded in 1980 as an anti-nuclear weapons group that campaigned for disarmament and more broadly to raise awareness of the effects of nuclear war. Its founders were doctors, nurses and medical researchers, and much of the organisation’s published material focused on the “medical consequences of nuclear war” – casualty statistics, the effects of radiation and the collapse of the health service. Just over a decade after MCANW’s formation, it merged with the older Medical Association for the Prevention of War (MAPW) to form Medact, which continues to exist today (though with a broader focus, beyond nuclear war).
