Italian illustration, 1935

Text: NA.

Year: 3 March 1935.

Publisher: La Domenica del Corriere.

Artist: Achille Beltrame.

Additional information: Shows Mussolini swinging a pickaxe against the Roman skyline. Published on the cover of La Domenica del Corriere with the text: ‘The Duce strikes the first blow of the pickaxe to free the area destined for the Mole Littoria, which, in four years, will symbolise the power of Fascist Italy in front of the monumental glories of the City.’ The Mole Littoria was intended to be a grand structure in the centre of Rome – the tallest building in Europe – celebrating the new Italy, though was never built. Designs were submitted by a number of architects, including Armando Brasini and Mario Palanti.
