Additional information: The Episcopal Society for Cultural and Racial Unity (ESCRU), established in December 1959, aimed to ‘remove all vestiges of segregation from the life of the Church’ and to campaign against segregation more broadly. The poster’s imagery was copied from an anti-apartheid poster distributed by Anglicans in Johannesburg, South Africa, during the Holy Week of 1959 (see below).
