O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree… (Soviet Christmas leaflet, 1941)

Text: ‘O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree…’

Year: 1941.

Publisher: NA.

Artist: NA.

Additional information: Soviet “Christmas card” from the Second World War depicting a dead German soldier lying beneath a Christmas tree on the Eastern Front. Dropped over German positions ahead of Christmas. Reverse text urges German soldiers to end the war and blames Hitler for their deaths: ‘The Führer’s Christmas present: On Christmas Eve the whole family is gathered around the festively-decorated Christmas tree. Only he, the soldier, is missing … He now lies DEAD under a snow-covered Russian fir tree, thousands of kilometres from his home. HITLER sent him and millions of other Germans to their deaths. GERMAN SOLDIERS, you who are still alive and consumed by longing for your loved ones on Christmas Eve. FINISH WITH HITLER! Put an end to this senseless war!’
