Death in Disguise? (American poster, 1966)

Text: Death in Disguise? Don’t pick up trouble! Is he a happy vacationer or an escaping criminal – a pleasant companion or a sex maniac – a friendly traveler or a vicious murderer? In the gamble with hitchhikers your safety and the lives of your loved ones are at stake. Don’t take the risk.

Year: 1966.

Publisher: FBI.

Artist: NA.

Additional information: Anti-hitchhiking poster and cartoon produced by the FBI (ca. 1966) showing hitchhikers with skulls hanging over the scene. The small text, signed by FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, warns citizens that the innocent-looking hitchhiker may in fact be ‘an escaping criminal’, a ‘sex maniac’ or a ‘vicious murderer’. The poster was issued several times in the late 1960s and early 1970s as part of the FBI’s crime prevention initiative.
