American poster, 1952

Text: [Description below]

Year: 1952.

Publisher: Advertising Council.

Artist: Otto Soglow.

Additional Information: In the poster, management and labor work together for high income, shorter hours, choice of jobs, more food, better housing, luxuries, better schooling and free elections, ultimately defeating communism with a ‘better way of life’ round fired from the ‘U.S.’ cannon. Small text at the bottom reads: ‘In co-operation with the advertising council’s campaign to explain the American economic system – This Page Contributed As A Public Service By The Editors Of Prom Magazine’.

The Advertising Council evolved out of the War Advertising Council that issued propaganda posters and other ephemera during the Second World War. During the early Cold War, the council embarked on a number of extensive campaigns to promote an ‘American way of life’ to the public and to counter the perceived threats of communism, racial division and general unrest. To that end, the council recruited a number of high-profile public figures and artists like Otto Soglow, the creator of this cartoon.
