Additional information: Depicts the decline of Christianity as a man walking down a stairway, from the light of the faith into the darkness of atheism. From top to bottom: Christianity, Bible not infallible, Man not made in God’s image, No miracles, No virgin birth, No deity, No atonement, No resurrection, Agnosticism, Atheism. The cartoon appeared in ‘Seven Questions in Dispute’, a book written by William Jennings Bryan, amid the Fundamentalist-Modernist dispute of the 1920s, which centered around differing interpretations of Christian doctrine and the impact of scientific advancements on religious beliefs.
