Additional information: British cartoon published in the Daily Express, 18 April 1980, showing Britain kissing goodbye to ‘Rhodesia Democracy’, personified by Robert Mugabe, in a cemetery filled with the tombstones of former colonies’ democracies. The cartoon was published shortly after Zimbabwe had formally won independence from Britain, when Mugabe officially became the country’s first Prime Minister after having won elections held a few weeks earlier.
