International Geophysical Year (British cartoon, 1956)

Additional information: Cartoon satirises the International Geophysical Year (IGY) scheduled to take place the following year. In the cartoon, American and British camps respectively host a game of baseball and a discussion of the Shakespeare authorship question, while the Soviet camp hosting military drills and lessons in basic Russian. Slave-penguins also seem to be pulling concealed tanks along outside the camp. The IGY was envisioned as an international scientific initiative to last from July 1957 to December 1958, with scientists from around the world cooperating in geophysical research projects. More than 70 nations ultimately participated in the IGY, with serious progress being made in the understanding of the Earth’s atmosphere and tectonics.
