Additional information: The book was published amid a vast wave of anti-masturbation literature in both Europe and America throughout the mid-to-late nineteenth century. The books often included illustrations like these demonstrating alleged physical risks. This particular image was one of the most well-known and most reproduced anti-masturbation images of the era.
