Capitalism (French illustration, 1907)

Publisher: L’Assiette au Beurre.

Artist: Gabriele Galantara.

Additional information: The illustration depicts capitalism personified as a bloated, money-grabbing monster rampaging through an industrial scene, crushing workers and factories underfoot. It was published in L’Assiette au Beurre, a socialist-anarchist magazine based in Paris during the early twentieth century. Gabriele Galantara, the artist, was a well-known Italian socialist artist whose work regularly appeared in publications across multiple nations during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Galantara also founded and edited his own socialist magazine, L’Asino, where many of his most iconic designs were published.
