In War – In Peace (Canadian cartoon, 1939)

Text: In War – In Peace.

Year: August 1939.

Publisher: The Federationist.

Artist: NA.

Additional information: The cartoon shows ‘Capitalism’ dropping a soldier into a cannon during war, and a war veteran into a bin in peacetime, reflecting the pacifist stance of The Federationist newspaper under the leadership of J. S. Woodsworth before the outbreak of the Second World War. The newspaper’s position however shifted to support the Canadian war effort following Woodsworth’s stroke in May 1940.
