Additional information: Finnish painting (ca. 1940-41) depicting Carl Gustaf Mannerheim, then commander-in-chief of the Finnish Defence Forces, with Finnish soldiers battling the Soviets. Painted between the Winter War and Continuation War. Mannerheim, a war hero, led the anti-Bolshevik Whites during the Finnish Civil War and served as president from 1944-46, overseeing peace negotiations with the Soviets. Karimo produced various artworks celebrating the Finnish army during this period.
